“Some issues parents expected to confront when their child was in their early twenties, have been pushed later. I think it’s safe to say that many parents expected to still be providing some financial assistance to their child when their child was in their early twenties. I don’t think that many parents expected to be doing it when their child was 30, and I think that from the young person’s point of view they probably expect to be getting some help from their parents while they were still in college and right out of college, but I’m sure that they didn’t expect to be having to go to their mother and father and ask for financial help over 30 or 32, and that is going on today. And so, I think the shifting timetable of the transition to adulthood has really made this an important topic and parents are perplexed”- Dr. Laurence Steinberg

Introducing Laurence Steinberg: A distinguished professor at Temple University with over 50 years of expertise in researching, teaching, and writing about parenthood and psychological development. As my family navigates the challenges of my first daughter’s transition to adulthood, I’ve invited Dr. Steinberg, a world-renowned expert on adolescent brain development, risk-taking, decision-making, family dynamics, peer relationships, juvenile justice, and school achievement. With a vast body of work, including nearly 500 articles and essays, and authorship of 17 books, such as “Age of Opportunity” and “You and Your Adolescent,” he is a leading authority in the field. He holds degrees from Vassar College and Cornell University and is a prolific contributor to reputable publications like the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, Laurence is also a frequent guest on NPR. As a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Association for Psychological Science, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, he brings a wealth of knowledge to his latest book, “You and Your Adult Child: How to Grow Together in Challenging Times.” Today, we are honored to have Laurence Steinberg join us on Parenting for the Future.
